Market Pullback Accelerates as Seasonal Weakness and Macro Concerns Collide
The first week of August delivered a sharp reality check to Wall Street as major indexes posted their steepest weekly losses in months, despite strong earnings from Big Tech. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 both slipped below their 21-day EMAs for the first time since spring, with the Dow tumbling nearly 3%. Early-week optimism—fueled by impressive beats from Meta, Microsoft, and others—quickly reversed as weak economic data, inflation concerns, and geopolitical tensions rattled investors. A surprise jobs report miss, coupled with downward revisions and political drama, stoke fears of stagflation. Sector-wise, 10 out of 11 S&P sectors ended the week in the red, with Materials and Discretionary hit hardest, the latter dragged down by Amazon’s post-earnings slide. Utilities emerged as the lone gainer, supported by AI-related infrastructure demand. Despite the turbulence, optimism remains for Big Tech's long-term trajectory, especially in AI and advertising, while gold held its ground and could break out as uncertainty lingers. For now, volatility appears to be the market’s new norm.
