Weekly Market Recap: Strong News, Weak Tape
Despite a series of fundamentally positive developments—including robust Nvidia earnings, softening but still-solid jobs data, and a late-week rebound—U.S. equities suffered a sharp pullback as deteriorating technicals, outweighed good news. Major indexes fell 2% on the week on average, with an abrupt Thursday reversal underscoring fragile sentiment amid Bitcoin’s slump, AI-spending concerns, and broad “sell-the-news” behavior. All major averages closed below their 50-day moving averages, prompting a defensive stance and reduced equity exposure. While Friday’s bounce and improving breadth offered some relief, sector performance reflected a clear rotation into defensives such as Health Care and Staples, away from Technology and Consumer Discretionary. With elevated fear indicators, strong corporate earnings beats, and long-term bullish trends still intact, investors are advised to stay cautious in the near term—limiting new positions while maintaining watchlists for leading stocks that continue to show relative strength.
