Volatility Takes Over: What Last Week Reveals About the Market
The markets delivered a turbulent week marked by sharp swings in major indexes, rising fear signals, and clear sector rotation. While the Dow briefly hit a new high after the government shutdown ended, growth stocks quickly dragged markets lower before a late bounce helped the S&P 500 finish slightly positive and the Nasdaq hold its 50-day line despite a second straight weekly decline. Treasury yields ticked higher as expectations for a December rate cut faded, Bitcoin crashed to six-month lows, and AI-linked chip stocks weakened even after strong earnings. Meanwhile, gold miners and energy names showed standout strength, with GLD up 58% on the year. Market internals flashed caution as decliners outpaced advancers, small caps broke down, the XLY:XLP ratio continued weakening, and the VIX spiked above 20 — all signs of rising fear and tightening liquidity. Defensive sectors like health care and staples outperformed while aggressive sectors such as tech, discretionary, and communications lagged. With earnings expectations facing downward pressure and rate-sensitive small caps increasingly vulnerable, traders are urged to cut losses quickly, trim exposure, and stay selective as volatility signals warn that more downside is possible.
